sushi x: "sushi. EX."
disclaimer: KW said that my sushi opinion doesn't count because i didn't order anything with fish. there are two stories about that. (please note - i'm a texture/consistency person. it's really hard for me to eat certain foods with a rubbery consistency or a weird texture. i just start thinking about tripe and it makes want to throw up.)
we ordered from sushi x (not actually sure where their website is, but they take online orders through grubhub). we had an all around positive experience, as i have had the other times i've ordered food from sushi x. they're located on chestnut street.
backstory #1
in high school, i went on a date with this boy that i didn't want to go on, but my mom really pushed for it. he had good grades, so she thought he was a model citizen (little did she know he also loved to smoke the greens and threw big ragers when his parents were away)
he asked where i wanted to eat, and i said "anything but sushi."
guess where we went? sushi.
he then proceeded to order FOR ME (something with salmon). i refused to eat it and i ordered something else. after an awkward meal, we went back to his house and played call of duty for two hours until i asked him to bring me home. it was the worst "date" ever.
backstory #2
when i finally got back into the sushi world, i was a fan of wild ginger for awhile.
they have half price sushi until 3:30PM everyday. who wouldn't be about the 1/2 price life?
one day i ordered a few rolls, and as i was halfway through the last one, i found a bug crawling out from between the cucumber. and no, it wasn't a flying bug, so it had been in there since it was placed in there.
that turned me off to sushi yet again.
all that to say, my sushi palette is limited. but i will continue my endeavors to expand my sushi palette and keep you well informed! KW seemed satisfied with her order.
my sushi order
+avocado cucumber roll
+sweet potato roll
KW's order
+spicy salmon roll
+salmon avocado roll
other recommendations
+veggie eggrolls (which are actually spring rolls)
+california roll
+shrimp tempura
staff
+very nice, easy to communicate with, and they've gotten my order right every time i've ordered there so far! they are quick and accommodating too - they offered to walk it over to me rather than me going to pick it up! that's good service :)
sushi x deals
+lunch box ($9.99 for a miso soup, house salad, rice, gyoza, california roll and an entree)
+all you can eat sushi for $22.99 monday-thursday or $24.99 friday-sunday.
my two cents
they're a little more pricey than wild ginger, but hey, you get what you pay for (which should not include bugs). i like that their rolls are cut in consistent sizes so you don't look stupid trying to fit a piece of sushi in your mouth. two weeks ago, i tried out sakura in wyckoff. they were definitely overpriced, and i just wasn't impressed. their presentation was lame, and their rolls weren't rolled very well. sushi x was better, but i wasn't blown away by the experience either. KW has a much more refined sushi palette than myself, so her thoughts are more detailed.
KW's two cents
"i felt the portions were generous at sushi x compared to other places. most tuna avocado rolls seem to have very thin slices of fish, but at sushi x i could actually taste the tuna, which i really liked. the spicy salmon roll wasn't as flavorfull as tani in glen rock. i would recommend getting a raw fish roll rather than the spicy salmon. the lunch special we ordered though, didn't include any soup or salad, which Tani does. overall, i thought sushi x was a good deal for ridgewood, and i would try it again if i was in ridgewood, but i wouldn't go out of my way. i just really love tani. and arigato and aoyama."
in my limited sushi opinion, sushi x will leave you satisfied with what you order and what you pay for. nothing glamorous.
